A Test of Grit and Determination

A beautiful morning at Cullinan Sports Ground brought together a group of the toughest riders in South Africa. As riders set off into the sunrise, the dusty gravel roads had riders in good spirits. As the day progressed, so did the intensity of the heat, pushing many to their limits. From waterpoint 3 to 4, the unforgiving sun took its toll, leading to several participants dropping out at waterpoint 4. Yet, amidst the adversity, those who persevered found themselves riding through the night, a testament to their determination and resilience.

In the face of such challenging conditions, the camaraderie among participants shone through. The team format of the race proved invaluable, with many praising their partners for providing crucial support during the darkest moments of the race. It was evident that having someone by their side, offering encouragement and motivation, made a significant difference in pushing participants towards the finish line.

One standout moment of the race was the historic achievement of Gabriel Gomes-Sebastiao, who became the first para-cyclist to tackle the Cullinan Ultra-Gravel. His emotional finish, crossing the line in a time of 14:54:35, was a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to triumph over adversity. Despite his teammates not completing the race, Gabriel’s determination and perseverance served as an inspiration to all who witnessed his remarkable feat.

In the elite categories, the competition was fierce, with riders pushing themselves to the limit in pursuit of victory. The men’s race saw a tight pack sticking together during the first half, with notable mentions of Sarah Hill and Stacy Paul, who held their own among their male counterparts. However, it was Thinus Redelinghuys who emerged as the ultimate champion, cycling solo and leading the pack to secure the top spot overall. In the elite men’s team, Kent Main and Keanan Roodt finished in first place with a time of 09:44:04 averaging 26.7km/h over the 260kms. Sarah Hill and Stacy Pual finished first in the elite women category with a finish time of 11:25:59.
